Resurgent Film Group Launching with Brad Thor’s ‘Lions of Lucerne’

September 23, 2014

Resurgent Film Group is launching operations with a movie version of Brad Thor’s action-thriller “The Lions of Lucerne.”

The newly minted company is aiming to fund and produce its own projects in the mid-budget range. “Lions of Lucerne,” which is planned for a shoot in Switzerland for the fall of 2015, will have a budget in the $60 million to $70 million range.

Des Carey is president, with Brent Baum as chief operating officer, Matthew Marsden as exec VP of development and Thor as executive chairman.

“The Lions of Lucerene” follows Scot Harvath, a young Navy SEAL turned U.S. Secret Service agent who survives an attack, which leaves 30 of his fellow agents dead and the president of the United States kidnapped. He begins a worldwide hunt for those responsible in an attempt to rescue the president.

Thor’s writing credits include thrillers such as “Act of War,” “Hidden Order” and “Black List.” He told Variety the company is hoping to turn “Lions of Lucerne” into a franchise since it’s the origin story for the Horvath character and is aiming at high-quality projects with worldwide appeal — along with investors committed to financing.

“We’re combining Merchant-Ivory, Goldman Sachs and Jerry Bruckheimer as our inspirations,” he added.

The company began taking shape three years ago as Thor sought a return to his pre-novelist roots in broadcasting.

“A new era has begun in entertainment and Resurgent will set its gold standard. By developing top quality projects, attracting top quality people, and deploying top quality processes, we are going to create exceptional entertainment product that respects our audience.”

Carey has designed and produced the digital finishing on over 80 films including “Quantum Of Solace,” “Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World’s End,” “Terminator: Salvation,” “Mission: Impossible III,” “Fast & Furious” and “Flight.”

Baum is the founder and previous president of Destination Films. He’s currently directing/producing the feature documentary “Finding Noah” and has been involved with development, production, financing, distribution and sale of such titles as “The Wedding Planner,” “Eye of the Beholder” and “Beautiful.”

Marsden’s credits as an actor include “Black Hawk Down,” “Rambo” and “Resident Evil – Extinction.” TV credits include “CSI Miami,” “The Ghost Whisperer,” “Nikita,” and “Two and a Half Men.”
